Description

The Contax AX is a distinctive professional 35mm autofocus SLR camera introduced in 1996. Its most innovative feature is the Automatic Back Focusing system, which achieves autofocus by moving the film plane rather than adjusting the lens. This unique mechanism allows the camera to autofocus with compatible manual-focus Contax/Yashica C/Y mount lenses.

The camera offers Single and Continuous Autofocus modes, as well as manual focus, providing flexibility for different shooting situations. Its compatibility with Carl Zeiss and other C/Y mount lenses makes it particularly appealing to photographers who want autofocus functionality while retaining the character of classic manual-focus optics.

The Contax AX features a comprehensive exposure system with Program, Aperture-Priority, Shutter-Priority, and Manual modes. Its electronically controlled shutter reaches speeds of up to 1/6000 second, while center-weighted and spot metering provide additional exposure control.

A built-in motor drive supports continuous shooting at up to approximately 5 frames per second. The large high-eyepoint pentaprism viewfinder, solid construction, and advanced focusing technology make the Contax AX an unusual and highly regarded camera in the history of autofocus film SLRs.
