Description

The Pentax MX-1 is a premium compact digital camera introduced in 2013, combining a 12-megapixel back-illuminated 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor with a fast SMC PENTAX 4× optical zoom lens. Its 28–112mm equivalent focal range covers a useful range from wide angle to short telephoto, while the bright f/1.8–2.5 aperture gives the camera strong low-light capability for a compact design.

The built-in lens uses 11 elements in 8 groups, including four aspherical elements, and focuses as close as 1cm in its dedicated Macro mode. The 28mm-equivalent wide-angle setting works well for travel, street photography, interiors, and landscapes, while the 112mm-equivalent telephoto setting is suitable for portraits and everyday details. The wide maximum aperture also allows greater control over depth of field and background rendering than many compact zoom cameras.

The MX-1 provides a more hands-on shooting experience than a typical compact camera, with dedicated mode and exposure-compensation dials, aperture-priority, shutter-priority, and manual exposure modes, as well as RAW recording in DNG format. Its sensor-shift Shake Reduction helps reduce camera shake, while the 3.0-inch 920,000-dot tilting LCD can be positioned upward or downward for shooting from different angles.

The camera's design is also an important part of its appeal. Pentax used brass covers and metal accents to give the MX-1 a substantial, classic-camera feel, and the finish can develop a distinctive appearance with use.
