Description

The Hasselblad 553 ELX is a motorized 6×6 medium format Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera body introduced in 1988 as part of Hasselblad's iconic V-System. Building upon the heritage of the 500EL series—famously adapted by NASA for the Apollo lunar missions—the 553 ELX was refined specifically to serve as a dependable, heavy-duty workhorse for studio fashion, commercial advertising, and technical portraiture.

A paramount engineering enhancement of the 553 ELX is its power supply system: replacing the obsolete proprietary Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries of its predecessors with five standard AA batteries. The body also incorporates Hasselblad’s Gliding Mirror System (GMS), which slides the internal reflex mirror backward during exposure to prevent upper-viewfinder vignetting when long telephoto lenses or extension bellows are attached.

Equipped with internal TTL/OTG (Off-The-Film) flash metering, an interchangeable Acute-Matte focusing screen, and multiple motor sequence operating modes (including mirror lockup options), the 553 ELX delivers smooth automatic film advance at up to 1.2 frames per second. Fully compatible with the extensive library of Hasselblad V-system leaf-shutter lenses, magazine backs, and digital backs, the Hasselblad 553 ELX remains an exceptionally solid and versatile medium format body.
