Description

The Leitz Canada APO-Telyt-R 180mm F3.4 is a high-performance telephoto lens designed for the Leica R system. Introduced in 1975, it was Leica's first apochromatically corrected lens and was designed by Walter Mandler at Leitz Canada. The optical formula uses seven elements in four groups.

Its 180mm focal length and F3.4 maximum aperture make it well suited to portraits, distant subjects, wildlife, and outdoor photography. The apochromatic optical design was developed to provide high sharpness, contrast, and improved correction of chromatic aberration across the image field.

The lens focuses manually from 2.5m to infinity and features a non-rotating focusing mount together with a built-in sliding lens hood. It has a diagonal angle of view of approximately 14 degrees and a smallest object field of 276 × 414mm.

This 3-Cam version is part of the original Leica R 3-Cam system and should be distinguished from later R-only versions. Early examples used Series 7.5 filters, while later production changed to an E60 filter thread; the optical design remained based on seven elements in four groups.
