Description

The Leitz Wetzlar MR-Telyt-R 500mm F8 is a compact reflex telephoto lens designed for the Leica R system. Introduced around 1980, it uses a catadioptric optical design combining conventional optical elements with mirrors, allowing a 500mm focal length to be housed in a comparatively compact body.

With its 500mm focal length and approximately 5° angle of view, the lens is suited to distant subjects such as wildlife, birds, sports, and outdoor details. The fixed F8 aperture is characteristic of reflex lenses, while the absence of a conventional adjustable diaphragm keeps the optical design relatively compact.

The lens focuses manually from 4m to infinity and provides a maximum magnification of approximately 1:7.5. It uses an E77 front filter thread and has a 750g weight, making it considerably more portable than many conventional 500mm telephoto lenses.

The MR-Telyt-R 500mm F8 was produced from approximately 1980 to 1996 and carries the Leica R bayonet mount. Its reflex construction gives the lens the characteristic rendering associated with mirror telephoto lenses, including distinctive out-of-focus highlights.
