Description

The Nikon F is Nikon's first professional 35mm SLR camera, introduced in 1959 and produced until 1973. It established the Nikon F-mount system and became the foundation of Nikon's professional SLR line. The camera was designed as a complete system with interchangeable lenses, viewfinders, focusing screens, motor drives, and other accessories.

The body uses a mechanically controlled titanium focal-plane shutter with speeds from 1 second to 1/1000 second, together with Bulb and Time settings. Mirror lock-up, depth-of-field preview, a self-timer, and interchangeable focusing screens are also provided. The standard system was designed for fully manual exposure operation.

One of the defining characteristics of the Nikon F is its modular viewfinder system. The camera could be fitted with an eye-level prism, waist-level finder, or Photomic metering finder, allowing the metering and viewing configuration to be changed according to the photographer's needs. Metering specifications therefore depend on the particular finder installed on the body.

The Nikon F also accepts Nikon F-mount interchangeable lenses and can be equipped with the F-36 or F-250 motor drives. With its robust mechanical construction, modular system design, interchangeable viewfinders, and historical importance, the Nikon F remains one of the most significant professional 35mm SLR cameras of the 20th century.
